Compassion in Marriage

Why is it that we want to speak kindly to the one closest to us, and the opposite happens? You want to speak gently, but you carry a ruler in your heart. You want them to answer in your way, and when they fail your expectation, a nameless fire rises — and kind words become mutual attack.

What truly torments you is not their language. It is your attachment to them. When they say the thing that stings, don’t rush to refute it. Take one breath and ask: behind those words, is there some helplessness, some fear?

They come home and complain the house is a mess. Answer “am I not tired too?” and the quarrel begins. But listen with compassion and you hear what is under the words: exhaustion, pressure. They are not attacking you. They are describing their own pain, badly.

When you stop treating conversation as a battle to the death and start understanding the suffering inside the other person, you no longer need to argue to defend yourself. You become the still point of the relationship — the source of its healing.
