If you are forty and things have suddenly stopped making sense — if you hardly recognise yourself — hear this: forty is not the start of confusion. It is the point where you truly begin to live as yourself.
Before forty we practise looking outward. We long to be approved of, loved, seen. We work hard, run the family, chase name and profit — a spinning top driven by other people’s standards. Spin long enough and you find yourself exhausted and hollow, because you have been living as the person in other people’s eyes and have misplaced your own.
Forty is a signal from heaven: stop running outward. Come home. Not the house you live in — the home inside. This practice does not require robes or vegetarian vows. It asks three things: stop using other people’s opinions as your mirror; learn subtraction in the middle of life; and rather than fear the future, live now — enjoy every breath, every cup of tea.
Forty is not the road into old age. It is life growing again.
