Bronzes, jades and Buddhas gathered over a lifetime; silver kettles and Jizhou cups made for the table.

Treasures文玩

Song, Ming, Qing — on the tea table, not in a cabinet

“I often set an old object on the table while I drink — a Southern Song Longquan piece, a Song censer with incense lit, a little animal I cannot even date. Old things are not for cabinets. They are for using slowly, while the tea goes around.”

The collection was gathered across thirty years in temples, markets and friendships. Pieces are photographed as found. Some remain with the house; some may be acquired by enquiry, with their story.

The silver kettle and the Jizhou cup

Around 2010, still abbot of the temple, Ernan read Lu Yu’s Classic of Tea on silver vessels — “pure, though verging on luxury” — and asked a lay disciple in the silver trade to make him a kettle. The mountain’s spring water was acid; the silver softened it. He has boiled his water in silver ever since.

Years of looking for the right form ended in the Yangxin kettle, “to nourish life with tea, to nourish the heart with tea”: a lifted handle that stays cool, hammered silver, a shape settled over a winter of discussion. The cups are Jizhou ware, tortoiseshell glaze over dark clay, each one different. Both are made in small numbers for the house and may be acquired.
